Review of Provillus vs Procerin

Hair loss is a reality to tens of millions of men and women. People lose hair all the time. On average, a healthy scalp naturally loses 100 or so hairs a day. Medications and nutritional deficiencies can cause hair loss, and too much heat styling can cause hair breakage that mimics hair loss. Male pattern baldness causes increasing patches of balding, while female pattern baldness causes an overall thinning of the hair all over the scalp. By age 30, 25% of men begin balding, and by age 50, half of all men show balding. For women, 20 to 25% will notice thinning of hair by age 50.

Treatments for hair loss include topical (applied directly to the scalp) products, dietary supplements, prescription drugs, and hair transplant surgery. These have varying degrees of effectiveness for hair regrowth, with side effects that range from zero to alarming. Drugs that treat prostate enlargement in men also sometimes stop hair loss in many cases and can cause hair regrowth. But these pills also have sexual side effects including loss of sex drive, and only work as long as they are taken regularly. They are not prescribed to women of childbearing age because of the risk of side effects, and are only rarely used in post-menopausal women.

There are numerous over-the-counter hair loss treatments, and two of them are Provillus and Procerin, which are sold over the internet. Both promise hair regrowth.

Provillus has two slightly different formulations: one for men and one for women. The Provillus system consists of a topical solution and a dietary supplement. Both male and female formulas contain Minoxodil, which is a drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for hair regrowth in men and women. It used to require a prescription, but can now be purchased over the counter. The men's formula contains 5% Minoxodil, while the women's formula contains 2% Minoxodil. When applied to the scalp, Minoxodil inhibits DHT, which stands for dihydrotestosterone. DHT shortens hair follicles' growing phase and causes the follicles to produce thinner and finer hair until they stop producing hairs altogether. Minoxodil encourages hair regrowth by blocking DHT in the scalp.

Procerin is a two-step treatment for male hair loss and thinning. It is not intended for use by women. Procerin includes supplement tablets that contain natural DHT blockers that have been proven safe. It also includes a foam containing hair growth stimulating compounds that assist in hair regrowth. Procerin's active ingredients are targeted at an enzyme that converts male testosterone to DHT, which causes hair thinning and loss. While the supplements target nutrition, the foam targets the specific chemical process that results in higher levels of DHT and hence, hair loss.

Provillus is clear that it will not help hair loss that is caused by certain medications, by serious illness, or by cancer treatments. The topical solution for men contains 5% Minoxodil, and the dietary supplement contains Zinc, Biotin, Vitamin B6, Saw Palmetto extract, pumpkin seed, nettle root, Siberian ginseng, and Muria Pauma bark extract. It should be applied two times a day, and the dietary supplement should be taken twice a day as well. The women's formula contains Minoxodil in a 2% solution, and the women's dietary supplement contains Biotin, Vitamin B6, Magnesium, Horsetail Silica, and Para-Amino Benzoic Acid. Like the men's formula, the lotion should be applied twice daily, and the supplement should be taken twice daily.

Procerin should be used once in the morning, and again before bed. The foam should be gently worked into the scalp, and the dietary supplement should be taken twice a day. The tablets contain Saw Palmetto Berries, Gotu Kola, Magnesium, Zinc, Nettles, Vitamin B6, Eleuthero Root, pumpkin seed meal, and Muira Puma Root. The topical foam contains Castor Oil, Saw Palmetto extract, Rooibos Leaf Extract, Grape Seed Extract, Linoleic Acid, Oleic Acid, Evening Primrose Oil, Avocado Oil, Niacin, Vitamin E, Zinc Sulfate, and Peppermint Oil.

Provillus men's and women's formulas, consisting of the Minoxodil solution and dietary supplement costs $49.95 for a one-month supply, $89.95 for a two-month supply, $149.95 for a four-month supply, and $199.95 for a six-month supply. It comes with a 90-day money back guarantee.

Procerin costs $49.99 for a one month supply, $129.99 for a three month supply, and $219.99 for a six month supply. This includes the topical foam and the supplements. It comes with a 90-day money back guarantee.

Both Procerin and Provillus claim to result in hair regrowth, and both provide testimonials. However, Minoxodil is evaluated and approved by the FDA for hair regrowth, while there is no FDA approval process for natural supplements such as those in the topical foam made by Procerin.
